A couple of months ago, baritone Brett Polegato (who also happens to be the editor of Art Song Canada Magazine) asked me to write an article for its latest issue celebrating all things Canadian. So I wrote a few paragraphs to tell of discovering and setting the remarkable words of poets Jan Zwicky and Michelle Poirier Brown, and painter/writer Emily Carr. These words became the inspiration for cycles for Tyler Duncan and Erika Switzer (Everything Already Lost), Colin Ainsworth and Pacific Opera Victoria‘s Kimberley-Ann Bartczak (The Length of a Day), and Krisztina Szabó and Canadian Art Song Project‘s Steven Philcox (Miss Carr in Seven Scenes).
It’s a wee peek behind the curtain of how words and music come together. Each of these projects had its own path, but each was a joy to work on from start to finish.
